Restoration Project

This 1931 Auburn Phaeton is a Full Classic just waiting to be
restored to its former glory!  I bought it a few years ago,
intending to learn about how to restore it, but just haven't
had the time.  I'm sure that there are many of you out there
who know Auburns inside and out - hopefully this
description will give you a good idea of what this project is
all about!

The car is mostly complete.  The all-metal body (
no
fiberglass reproduction parts!
) is mostly solid.  The fenders,
particularly the wells of the front fenders, are soft and/or
need to be patched (see photos).  The front portion of the
frame appears to have been recently sandblasted and painted.
Wood repair is necessary, but I'm not sure to what extent.

As to all the parts:  the car came with lots of parts; I have
done a partial inventory, but not a complete one because
many of the parts are wrapped and fit just so in a bucket in
the back seat.  Since I am not jumping straight into this
project, I've left the parts where they are so that they stay
together and in nice condition.  The front bumper is on the
car; the rear bumper is in the back seat. The middle portion
of the rear bumper is "missing"(see photo of the back of the
car before I removed the bumper) - I am not sure if this is
by design.  The hood and dash are present.  There are two
chrome bezels for the dash, plus loose gauges.  There is a
part that looks like it may be a bracket for the tail light.
There are several parts that look new and that are wrapped
in bubble wrap or in newspaper; these parts include (1)
headlight buckets and beauty rings, (2) chrome rings that are
concave ovals and could be for running lights or another
type of light, (3) deflector shield inserts for the headlights, in
new or like new condition, (4) running lights, (5) headlight
lenses, (6) license plate bracket, (7) a variety of other parts
that I haven't unwrapped.

As to the motor: Straight-8 engine is included.  The previous
owner told me that it would turn over, but I haven't tried it.
The carburetor, manifolds, and distributor are all there.  It
looks like the radiator has had some work done to it because
it's nice and clean inside.  There's not a starter, generator, or
water pump.  The engine number matches the (loose) cowl
tag.  I don't know the condition of the running gear.

The windshield and windshield frame are inside the car; the
windshield glass is cracked.  The top bows (all of them, I
believe, but I'm not positive) are present and loose.  The
bows may not all be good enough to use for the restoration,
but are likely good enough to use for patterns if they can't be
used as-is.

Wheels: all four knockoffs are present, and all 4 tires hold
air.  Spares are missing.

That's it, folks!  I've been involved with a variety of
restoration projects, and it's my estimation that 80% of
what's needed for this car is present.  I will do my best to
answer any more questions about this car that come in ...
1931 AUBURN PHAETON
READY FOR RESTORATION
MANY PARTS INCLUDED!
NOTE: These photos were taken at different times in different locations
and light conditions.  The windshield is included with the car, though some
photos show the car without the windshield installed because it's best to
transport the car that way.  There are also several photos of the parts that
are included with this car - both spread out on the ground and stored in the
car; these are not duplicates.
